Small Space with Big Dreams

Sail Away Boys Room by Saruul Herz

This kid’s bedroom was a project that stayed close to my heart. It was a new condo that the family had just purchased in the heart of NYC’s SoHo neighborhood. Their baby boy was moving from crib life into a room of his own. Like all parents, they wanted an environment that was bright, happy, and had ample space to explore the world.

I had envisioned the entire room with a world map. Still, I had to make it memorable and find a unique design with quality materials. I wanted it to be authentic. So, I partnered up with a mapping company and printed blue tone-on-tone World Map wallpaper.

We printed it with a dark blue border and painted the wall in one of the light blues from the map. Both light and dark blues gave a nice framing border for the map itself. I had also made sure the map to be slightly smaller than the entire wall (6” shorter on all sides, to be exact) to avoid any unevenness. It happens a lot - the wall could have a bow, or the ceiling might have a slight slant.

With the wallpaper in place, the room came together naturally with bead-board furniture, a hand-hooked custom rug, and an authentic sailboat model. The room became a unique space to explore.
